February is Heart Month

Feb 2020: Heart Disease doesn’t just happen to older adults. It is happening to younger adults more often, partly because conditions leading to heart disease are becoming more common in younger populations. Conditions and behaviors that are putting people at risk for heart disease include high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, smoking, obesity, diabetes, physical inactivity, and unhealthy eating patterns including eating too much salt.

Take control of your heart health today.

  1. Don’t Smoke. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the US.
  2. Manage conditions and behaviors mentioned above that lead to heart disease.
  3. Make heart-healthy eating changes. Eat food low in trans-fat, saturated fat, added sugar and sodium. Fill at least half your plate with vegetables and fruit and aim for low sodium options.
  4. Stay active! Get moving for a minimum of 150 minutes per week, even if breaking activity up into 10 minute blocks.

Stay Heart Healthy!
